April 21, 2016: Quick Update

It’s only a couple of days since I last posted photographs, so I’ll just put up one to show that things are changing steadily near downtown Kenora.

Laurenson’s Lake, Round Lake, Rabbit Lake and a little of Lake of the Woods.

I snapped this picture from near the airport as we circled to land, then cropped it to make Safety Bay and Rat Portage Bay more visible. Click on it to zoom in and take a look at those areas, and you’ll be able to see a few interesting things. The floatplane docks and the MS Kenora are clear of ice. Coney Island is about half clear, and the ice at Coney Island Beach looks candled*. Lastly, ice on Rat Portage Bay is letting go both east and west of Gun Club Island, so it will soon  be wide open like Safety Bay.

*Candled is a term used to describe ice that is breaking down into individual crystals. Those can take the form of long hexagons, shaped much like the little pencils you get at golf courses. They float like a mat, flexing from wave action and tinkling like wind charms. They don’t last long.

  1. Love the sound of the ice when it candles. Late at night when it’s quiet it sounds like some one is lightly shaking a chandelier. Thank You for all your great reports…This year is coming to a close very quickly.

  2. Thanks for the updates. Any chance of getting updates for the Clearwater/Ptarmigan Bay areas like last year? Keep up the good work!

    • I’m not ignoring you Clearwater folks, it’s just that Clearwater is a little further from the Kenora airport. I’m waiting until there’s real progress before I call in enough favours to stray that far from my usual flight path.
