Here’s a weird fact! Did you know that Kenora will experience the spring equinox on an earlier date than our neighbours in Thunder Bay? This impossible sounding situation is because the equinox happens to the entire planet at the same time: 04:30 on March the 20th, Universal Time (you know, from Greenwich). But guess what? That’s half an hour after midnight in Thunder Bay, but half an hour before midnight in Kenora and Winnipeg. So equinox falls on the nineteenth for us this year!
Having trouble believing it? The Weather Network has an explanation here. Short version: it has to do with leap years.
Okay, it’s a technicality. But I’ll take an early spring any way I can get it!
