April 28, 2015: The Bridge is Out

The footbridge to Coney Island comes out each spring. When ice no longer blocks boats from traveling from downtown to Devil’s Gap, that leaves the floating bridge as the only obstacle to navigation, and it is removed.

It came out today. I got word from my sources at the Lakeside Inn, but by the time I got to the Kenora Webcam, it was already gone!

For comparison, last year it did not come out until May 15th. By that measure, we are running 18 days ahead of last spring. That fits quite well with the overall look of things and offers further assurance that we are on track for being ice free in the first week of May.

The next step will be when the area around Town Island clears. I may obtain fresh aerial photographs this afternoon or evening.

  1. Thank you very much for your ice patrol, very useful indeed. I am on the east side of Shoal Lake, so your blog has the ability to show when it is possible to get there from Kenora….
