April 14, 2014: First Photo of the Year

Brace yourselves, it’s going to be a late Spring. Here’s the first aerial photograph of the ice for this year; you can see that the floatplane docks in downtown Kenora are still iced in.

Downtown, with the LOW Hospital ahead of the wingtip. Click on this photo to see it in full resolution.

Although there are a few patches of open water where the current runs strongest, many parts of Lake of the Woods still have ice four to five feet thick, I am told.

For comparison, you might want to click on the links to Previous Years on the right. Hint. Locate the 2012 Album and check out the folder 2012-04-13. That’s right: two years ago, the ice was all gone before the middle of April.

Oh, and tonight’s forecast overnight low? -18ºC. Not helping!
